What do I know?

Saturday I was bored and nothing worth watching was to be found on the tube. PBS is having their pledge drive, so that means that there's actually stuff that I'd want to watch on. The next show up was called "Andy Andrews: Seven Decisions" and I think to myself "Is that the same Andy Andrews who used to be on Nashville Now all the time?" I watched a while and it was him. Apparently, in the years since Nashville Now left us, Andy has apparently became a big time motivational speaker. It was a pretty good speech. It's hard for me to believe the guy who used to tell jokes between Shotgun Red and the Geezinslaw Brothers is now "the modern day Will Rogers" as one reviewer put it. Hence my title "What do I know?"

Other things that prove I no nothing are the internet and TV on DVD. When I was in college 10+ years ago, I fiddled a bit with HTML and web browsers, but not seriously. I thought the web was just a fad, like CB radio or something. Oops. And selling the TV shows you just showed on DVD? Aren't you hurting your syndication rights? Who would buy a whole season of a TV show that's still on? Apparently a lot of people. That's why TV folks make the big bucks I guess. I don't make the big bucks, because, hey, what do I know?

Mission Almost Accomplished

A few years ago, I stated that my profession goal was to have my salary listed in Fanny Seiler column. Fanny retired a few years ago, and I'll no longer be working in state government soon See Here. However as part of the transition, I received compensation for my accrued sick leave. The amount of this payout was listed in a column by Fanny's replacement, Phil Kabler. I can't seem to find it online (luckily, I didn't want to brag about the money, just about making the paper) So, although it's not exact, I'll consider this goal accomplished.

A salute to Iggy

During the rain delay at the the Food City 250 at Bristol this fall, we were listening to the NASCAR radio traffic on our scanner. One of the dryer trucks was driven by a guy named Iggy. Every once in a while you'd hear the tower call out "Iggy, go down to turn one" or "Iggy, hit the back stretch one more time". It made the rain delay a little less boring. Here's a possible picture of Iggy at work:

So here is a much belated salute to Iggy and all the folks who work hard to put on NASCAR races for fans like me. Thanks!

Mr. Cartoon lives

I was flipping channels yesterday and caught the end of a commercial for a local ISP. The tagline was "And tell them Jule Huffman sent you" or something like that. I was astounded be cause I thouht Jules had passed on the great weather channel in the sky. So who in the world is Jule Huffman, you ask? He used to be the weatherman at WSAZ TV in Charleston WV, but that's not why he's important.

When I was a young lad, after school I would head home to watch Mr Cartoon and Beeper. Mr. Cartoon, as you've probably figured out, was portrayed by Jules Huffman. Beeper was...I'm not sure what Beeper was. He's standing behind Mr. Cartoon (scroll down a bit) here

Mr Cartoon played your standard Looney Toon cartoons and had a studio audience of little kids. I lived to far away to ever do the live Mr. Cartoon experience, unfortunately. Kids would send in jokes and riddles, and they had games and what not. He'd ask kids a riddle and if they didn't know the answer, they'd get the dreaded "Yuckit Bucket". Ooh!

Then Jules retired. The afternoon show was replaced by some Oprah woman. Mr. Cartoon lived on early saturday mornings, but it just wasn't the same. It eventually faded away.

Ahh, enough rememberances of my younger days. I'll finish up my blog posting the same way Mr. Cartoon ended his show.

Take a deep breath.
Take another deep breath.
Take ANOTHER deep breath.
Hold it.
Hold it.
HOLD it.
Now wave like mad and say bye Cartooners!

Back to Work

Getting back to work after a holiday is always a pain. Even getting back to work after a good night's sleep is usually a chore these days. I've been struggling about how much personal information to put out here, and even more so work information. Well, here goes. I currently work for the West Virginia Workers' Compensation Commission . After the first of the year, I'll be working for Brickstreet Mutual Insurance Company. I'll still be doing the same job, just for a private company, not a government entity. Without giving out to much insider information, let's just say it's been an interesting process.

Ok, so it wasn't Friday night

But Ted took the Truck championship Saturday morning. Woo hoo!

As for the blogging absence (yeah I said I'd try to do it daily, try being the operative word), the Monday before Thanksgiving always marks the first day of Deer Season in West Virginia. We had a decent hunt. I filled my tags and my freezer, so all is well.

Let's see if I can get this blog thing going this time!

Tonight, I will be very happy

One of two things will happen tonight. Either Ted Musgrave will win his first Craftsman Truck Championship, or Dennis Setzer will do the same. Ted is my favorite NASCAR driver. He has been since the 16 Family Channel Thunderbird days. I wish I could say it was since the Slinger Speedway days, but that was before I became a fan of even auto racing. Nevertheless, if Ted wins the Championship, I'll be a happy camper.

On the other hand, Dennis Setzer is only 58 points behind Ted. He's still in the running for the title. Interestingly, Dennis also used to run the #1 Mopar Dodge. At the time it was owned by Bob Keselowski, though. I've liked Dennis since he almost won Dodge's first Craftsman Truck race at Milwaukee in 1995. He came in second that day. If Dennis win the championship, I'll still be happy.

I'll be a little more happy if Ted wins, but I'll be all right with Dennis winning. Go get 'em boys, and may the best truck win!

Excuses Excuses

I never really intended to much blogging anyway, I suppose. It's mostly because I'm annoyed that someone else got to nuggie99.blogspot.com before I did. Unfortunately, the person who got it first isn't even using it. Part of me suspects I reserved it long ago, but forgot that I registered it. I don't suppose it matters.

Then again, Isaac Asimov once wrote that he went into his office and wrote from 9 to 5, whatever he took a notion to write about that day. Maybe i'll take the same approach and spend 15 minutes or so with the thoughts in my head and put something out everyday. Let's see how that works out.
